No 11. Northern Sensation

 

 

7 Day Itinerary

 

Day 1: Auckland *(D)

Welcome to the beautiful city of Auckland, often referred to as the 'City of Sails', because one out of every six residents has a boat!  This is New Zealand's largest city and the international gateway for all flights arriving from the northern hemisphere.  Your tour guide will be waiting to welcome you at arrivals, before heading off to the Copthorne Hotel in Parnell to freshen up. We take you to see some of our southern ocean marine life at Kelly Tarlton’s.  Then we go to the Auckland Railway Station to see the Giant Waka Canoe.  We then move on to the Museum of transport and Technology (motat for short) to see the stunning old times.  Then we head up the Skytower, the southern hemispheres tallest building at 328 meters, offering breathtaking views for up to 80 kilometres in every direction on a clear day.  Have a go at beating the machines in the casino before heading back up the tower for a buffet dinner.

Day 2: Auckland – Waitomo *(B, D)

After breakfast you’ll depart Auckland heading for Rotorua, travelling down though the scenic Waikato.  Stopping at the fabulous Ngaruawhahia Marae, we visit Hamilton and the Mighty Waikato River and Lake Karapiro.  After lunch we head onto the limestone landscape of the Waitomo Caves, which has been artfully sculpted by water and time.  See glow-worms light up the caves like constellations in the night skies.

Day 3:  Waitomo - Rotorua *(B, D)

Today we depart for the geo-thermal city of Rotorua, right in the heart of the north island.  Discover the volcanic phenomenon and learn about New Zealand's Maori culture.  Visit Te Wairoa 'The Buried Village', showing you first hand the chaos and mayhem that transpired on the night Mount Tarawera erupted.  Visit Whakarewarewa geothermal wonderland and travel up Rotorua’s Skyline Gondola for stunning panoramic views over the lakes and towns and for the adventurous take a luge ride down 1 or all 3 tracks.

Day 4: Rotorua - Taupo *(B, D)

A short drive from Rotorua is Taupo.  We take you to visit Orakei Karako ‘possibly the best thermal area left in the world’ and only accessible by boat.  Before we get to Taupo you’ll visit New Zealand’s only prawn farm and then cruise the mighty Waikato River, getting sensational views of Huka falls. New Zealand's highest volume waterfall. Take a short walk and view 220,000 litres of water per second go through a 20 metre crevice, which makes up the falls. We also visit the renowned Huka Honey Hive for a taste of their liquid gold.

Day 5: Taupo - Wellington *(B, D)

This morning we travelling down passed Lake Taupo and Mt Ruapehu, New Zealand’s largest active volcano. Visit the National Army Museum in Waiouru, which has a unique collection of military exhibits and memorabilia. Next stop ‘Gumboot Capital of the World’ Taihape, for the ‘New Zealand at its Best’ gumboot throwing competition.  Visit Route 66 on 1 diner in Foxton, for a late lunch.  We take you to see a Maori Church called 'Re Rangiatea' at Otaki, then onto Wellington.

Day 6: Wellington *(B, D)

 After breakfast your day starts by exploring New Zealand’s nature, art, history, and cultural heritage at Te Papa. Visit the famous ‘Bee Hive’ New Zealand’s Parliament Building, before catching the famous Wellington Cable Car. Walking back through the beautiful Botanic Gardens.  Enjoy dinner in the hotel resturant, before taking a night drive to Mt Victoria. Comming back through busy Courtenay Place.Accommodation:   Copthorne Hotel, Wellington. 

Day 7: Wellington – Auckland *(B)

After breakfast we head to Wellington railway station  to ride back up to Auckland Depending on time, some last minute shopping / sightseeing.
