7 Day Itinerary North Island

 

As you travel to New Zealand, you will cross the International dateline and “loose a day“.

Day 1. Auckland *(D)

Welcome to Auckland, often referred to as the 'City of Sails', because one out of every six residents has a boat!  This is New Zealand's largest city and the international gateway for all flights arriving from northern hemisphere.  Your tour guide meet you at the luggage collection area, we gather and move toward the exit to board the bus and head to the Copthorne Hotel in Parnell, Auckland.  Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing or enjoying some of our southern ocean marine life at Kelly Tarlton’s or discover some of the great names of New Zealand's aviation and motor history at the Museum of Transport and Technology (motat for short).  Then we head up Auckland’s Sky Tower, the southern hemispheres tallest building at 328 meters, offering breathtaking views for up to 80 kilometers in every direction on a clear day.  Have a go at beating the machines in the casino before heading back up the tower for a buffet dinner.

Day 2. Auckland Waitomo Rotorua *(B, D)

This morning we travel south towards the limestone landscape of the Waitomo Caves, which has been artfully sculpted by water and time.  First stop is Ngaruawahia Marae for a brief insight into Maori culture. Once in Waitomo see glow-worms light the caves, like constellations in the night skies - definitely worth the visit.  Next, the geo-thermal city of Rotorua, right in the heart of the North Island, discover the volcanic phenomena and learn more about New Zealand's Maori culture.  Travel up Rotorua’s Skyline Gondola for stunning panoramic views over the lakes and town.  For the adventurous, ride the thrilling luge down 1 or all 3 tracks.  Enjoy dinner at Skyline Restaurant.

Day 3. Rotorua - Taupo *(B, D)

A short drive away is Taupo, on the way we visit Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, thousands of years in the making.  This is one of New Zealand’s most colorful volcanic environments.  We come by the famous Orakei Korako, possibly the best thermal area left in the world.  Visit New Zealand's only prawn farm and the Huka Honey Hive to sample some of their liquid gold.   Then we cruise the mighty Waikato River, getting up and personal to the colossal Huka falls.  New Zealand's highest volume waterfall, we also take a walk and view 220,000 litres of water per second go through a 20 meter crevice that make up the falls.

Day 4.  Taupo - Napier *(B, D)

Today we leave for Napier; here you will visit our famous Art Deco Museum, which has a permanent exhibition about the 1931, 7.8 magnitude earthquake.  You will visit Cape Kidnappers Gannet Reserve. Back in Napier freshen up at the hotel then take a walk along Marine Parade and around Napier city, maybe a game of mini golf or a trip to Opossum World.  New Zealand’sonly educational display that deals with the reality of the ecological nightmare that the opossum has become in New Zealand.

Day 5.  Napier Wellington *(B, D)

Today we head south towards Wellington. Sightseeing along the way, we climb up 'Te Mata Peak' for a lovely view over the valley.  Next is Palmerston North, then through to Foxton to Route 66 on 1 diner for lunch. Visit the windmill in Foxton and 'Te Rangiatea' church, made famous in the early days in Otaki.  We continue south to Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city.

This evening is free to enjoy a walk around sightseeing or to relax in the spectacular surroundings.

Day 6. Wellington *(B, D)

Your day starts by exploring New Zealand’s nature, art, history and cultural heritage at the world renowned Te Papa Museum.  Visit the famous ‘Bee Hive’ New Zealand’s Parliament Building, before catching the famous Wellington Cable Car.  Strolling back through the botanical gardens and the fascinating Begonia House.  Enjoy dinner in the hotel restaurant before taking a night drive to Mt Victoria.  See the night life of Courtenay Place as you head back to the hotel.

Day 7. Wellington Auckland *(B)

Flight times are required to liaise with the flight from Auckland to U.S.A.  Depending on time, some last minute shopping / sightseeing, before boarding the plane.
